What should you look for in a 12v air compressor?
If you just need an air compressor to inflate kids’ toys, you only need a low PSI pump. On the other hand, if you’re planning to inflate vehicle tires you will need a higher PSI. Most cars, for instance, have tires that require around 35 PSI tire pressure. The good news is that most compressors are designed to handle a variety of inflation tasks including vehicle tires. Most 12V air pumps plug into an available 12V power port in your vehicle. Some come with a 120VAC adapter so you can plug them into AC power when available. A few others are battery powered and can operate independently without the need to plug them into 12VDC or 120VAC power to operate.
Not all models come with the adapters, so if you’re interested in using AC power, make sure it comes with an adapter or an adapter is available.
Most 12V air compressors will inflate a tire. The question is how long will it take. If you’re not concerned with the time, then just about any small air compressor will do. If you don’t feel like waiting several minutes like in the case of some cheaper models, then you need to pay attention to air flow.
How long it takes an air pump to inflate a tire is related to its airflow measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The higher the airflow at a given PSI, ambient air temperature, and ambient pressure, the faster the tire will inflate.
Unfortunately, it’s difficult to compare pumps based on CFM because it is dependent on air temperature and pressure. If manufacturers used standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) to label their pumps, the comparison would be easy, but they usually only publish CFM if at all because it’s usually the highest number.
Instead, manufacturers choose to publish how long it takes to inflate car and truck tires. These numbers are mostly useful to give you an idea of whether a given pump has the performance to handle your inflation needs.
A 12V air compressor’s duty cycle rating is the percentage of time it can run at a specific PSI for a given time for a given ambient temperature before it will either shut down automatically or should be shut down manually. Usually, the specification is for 10 minutes at 100 PSI at 72 degrees F. Unfortunately, many 12V compressor manufacturers don’t publish this specification.
It comes into play mostly when you’re using an underpowered mini air compressor to inflate a tire or other inflatable above its capability and the process takes longer than normal.
The reason this happens is that portable air pumps don’t have air pressure storage tanks, but rather operate continuously while inflating. The process causes heat which can damage a pump if allows to build up.
Look for a model of 12-volt compressor that is equipped with a safety cutoff switch that prevents damage to the 12V air compressor from overheating.
Digital Air Pressure Gauge
It’s the digital age and manufacturers are adding digital readouts and digital controls to their compressors. In the case of a 12V air compressor, some models provide a digital readout instead of an analog gauge. Digital readouts are more user-friendly by being easier to read, particularly in low light or when it’s raining. The can also have digital controls that stop the pump when a specific digital PSI is reached.
Air Hose Connection
You have two choices for valve stem connections. Some models have screw-on connectors and some have lever quick-connect connections.
Screw-on connectors provide a positive connection that won’t leak and can usually handle more pressure than a lever connector. The downside is that they require you to get the threads lined up so that cross-threading the connection doesn’t keep you from properly securing them. If you’re in a hurry or in an awkward situation, this can be frustrating. Also, in the process of trying to secure the connection, it may be possible to let a lot more air out of the tire. Again, this can be very frustrating.
Quick-connections push easily on to the valve stem and secure by pushing down a lever. Their advantage is ease of attachment which can save time and aggravation, but it may be more difficult to get a very secure connection. This is particularly true in colder weather or emergency situations where maneuvering may be more difficult.
You won’t find them in higher pressure pumps and even with 100 PSI pumps, you may find that they may release more pressure when attaching or detaching.
Power Cords and Pneumatic Hoses
Make sure the model you choose has a long enough DC power cord combined with its air hose to reach from your 12V power port to the tire or other inflatables you want to inflate. It doesn’t get more frustrating than to come up short in this department.
Because a 12V air compressor is designed to be portable and may even be stored in a vehicle, it is subject to more abuse than stationary air compressors. Make sure the model you choose has durable air hoses that stay flexible in cold weather and high-quality 12VDC adapters that will reliably transfer power from the power port to the compressor.
Of course, a 12V air compressor can be used for a variety of inflatables besides tires including sports balls, beach toys, air mattresses, and more. Most of these other inflatables are not designed to accept a screw-on or quick connection.
