You should be able to use a 60 gallon air compressor to power air tools like nail and staple guns, impact wrenches, air ratchets, air hammers and chisels, rotary tools and grinders, paint sprayers and more.  A 60 gallon air compressor can be rated by horsepower (HP), cubic feet per minute (CFM), standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM), air pressure PSI

Applications

In general, most air compressors are powerful enough to drive simple air tools for simple tasks.  If you need long duration operation of more powerful air tools, you will need to consider the power source, the tank size, the type of pump, and the compressor’s performance rating.

Performance

You should start with the tools you’re going to use with your compressor.  Each tool will have a standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) rating which can be matched to the same specification for each compressor you’re considering.

A rule of thumb when choosing a compressor based on the SCFM of your tools is to multiply the highest SCFM rating of your tools by 1.5 to get the minimum SCFM for the compressor.

If you need to operate more than one of your tools at the same time you will need to add the SCFM specifications of the tools together to achieve the base SCFM of the compressor and then multiply that by 1.5.

If you’re compressor is going to be used indoors you will need to choose an electric air compressor, but if it’s portable or will be used exclusively outdoors, there are gasoline-powered models available.

For an electric model, horsepower will determine how much voltage you will need to drive it.  A rule of thumb is that if the compressor you’re considering is greater than two horsepower, you will need a 220-240V circuit to drive it.

If you are counting on using household 120V current, you may be disappointed to find that most 60-gallon models require more power and draw more amps.

PSI

The pressure accumulated inside the compressor tank is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI).  You should expect a 60 gallon air compressor to be rated at more than 100 PSI which should be adequate for many pneumatic tools.  For more powerful tool requirements you may need a model rated at 150 PSI or higher.

Air Capacity

Air capacity or tank size determines how long you can run your air tools until the compressor needs to replenish its compressed air supply in the tank.  A 60 gallon compressor should give you enough capacity to run most basic pneumatic tools continuously uninterrupted for an adequate period of time that allows the pump to cool between cycles and improves its life.

Compressor Type

Compressor pumps come in a variety of styles that attempt to match economy with performance.  The most common are single-stage compressors that produce compressed air in one phase at the same pressure.

Two-stage models use multiple cylinders to compress the air in stages to effectively store more compressed air at higher pressures in the same size tank.  This allows you to have longer run times which is useful for high-demand work like painting.

Oil vs. Oil-Free

Compressors can use oil lubrication or be oil-free.  You might think that oil-free is a better choice because it’s simpler and removes the weight of oil storage.  The truth is that larger air compressors use oil lubrication because it can handle the demands of a larger compressor better than the special piston rings used in oil-free models.  That said, the technology is improving, so that in the future, more compressors will be oil-free.  In general, oil-free models are smaller and much better suited for 60 Gallon Air Compressor: Puma Industries PK-6060V Air Compressor Horizontal Viewhome use or as a job-site model that needs to be transported from site to site.

Portability

A 60 gallon compressor may be purchased with wheels, but it’s not going to be very portable.  Most are heavy-duty, vertically-oriented, weigh a lot and sit indoors in one place while in use.  Portable models are usually smaller and less capable.

Orientation

For more heavy-duty air compressors you have a choice of two configurations.  You can choose between a horizontal model and a vertical air compressor.  a vertical or upright air compressor saves floor space while you might be able to tuck a horizontal model under a table or shelf.  Other than that, there is no difference in capability.
