You should start with the tools you’re going to use with your compressor. Each tool will have a standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) rating which can be matched to the same specification for each compressor you’re considering.
A rule of thumb when choosing a compressor based on the SCFM of your tools is to multiply the highest SCFM rating of your tools by 1.5 to get the minimum SCFM for the compressor.

The truth is that larger air compressors use oil lubrication because it can handle the demands of a larger compressor better than the special piston rings used in oil-free models. That said, the technology is improving, so that in the future, more compressors will be oil-free. In general, oil-free models are smaller and much better suited for home use or as a job-site model that needs to be transported from site to site.
A 60 gallon compressor may be purchased with wheels, but it’s not going to be very portable. Most are heavy-duty, vertically-oriented, weigh a lot and sit indoors in one place while in use. Portable models are usually smaller and less capable.
For more heavy-duty air compressors you have a choice of two configurations. You can choose between a horizontal model and a vertical air compressor. a vertical or upright air compressor saves floor space while you might be able to tuck a horizontal model under a table or shelf. Other than that, there is no difference in capability.
