I know from personal experience that leathercraft is a great hobby that is really fun and accessible for everyone.  If you’re just getting started, you will need a leather tool kit with at least the basics, some instructions on basic leathercraft techniques that you can get on the internet, and some ideas for leathercraft projects to get you started.  The only thing that costs money is the leather tool kit, but you don’t have to buy a lot of tools right off the bat to get you rolling.  You can start small and expand your leather tool kit as you add more complex leather projects to your portfolio.

Leather Tool Kit Tandy Leather Factory Basic Leathercraft SetLeathercraft is a really fun hobby, particularly for young people, because you don’t need to be highly skilled to make great leather projects and it doesn’t cost a lot to be a leathercraft hobbyist.  Children and adults alike can create beautiful and useful leathercraft items for themselves or as wonderful gifts that everyone will appreciate.

Once you’ve chosen your leathercraft project and you have the leather supply, there are basically three steps to making most leathercraft projects.  First you need to decorate the leather, then you need to sew or lace it together if required, and finally, you can protect and color it with stain or dye.  The decorating and lacing part is accomplished with basic leatherworking tools.  What basic leather tools should be part of your leather tool kit from the beginning?

Swivel Knife

Arguably the most important tool for decorating leather, the swivel knife is used to either cut along pre-traced lines of a pattern you put on the leather or to freeform cut a design of your choice.  These cuts layout the design that you fill-in using other leather tools.  The knife swivels to make it easier to follow the curves of a design.

Camouflage Tool

The tools of leathercraft are basically stamps that allow you to imprint a design into damp leather as part of your overall design.  The camouflage tool imprints a design similar to a seashell, provides fill-in for larger areas of the design, and adds emphasis where you need it to areas of the design.

Beveler

You use a beveler to create a 3D look by making an indentation along one side of a cut.  The indentation leaves a raised edge along the cut that causes the line to stand out when you look at it from different angles.  Bevelers are available in different shapes and faces depending on the look you’re trying to achieve.  It’s fun just to experiment with different bevelers to see the effects that you can produce.

Pear Shader

A pear shader is used to create a curved appearance in the leather by creating a darker indentation.  By tilting the pear shader at various angles you can create different effects using the same tool.  This is one of the more challenging tools to use because its effects depend on how heavily you strike it with the mallet at the same time as you move it across the leather.  With practice, it can create beautiful effects in your leather projects.

Seeder

A seeder creates an interesting effect in the leather designed to look similar to seeds.  It is usually used sparingly to create the center of flowers and other designs.  Like other tools with small heads, you have to be careful while striking it not to accidentally cut through the leather.

A veiner is used to enhance the illusion of depth of a line started by the beveler and add a curved look to the design.

Shell Tool

The shell tool produces a pattern similar to a veiner only with a scalloped edge.  It’s used for the same purpose as a veiner but imparts its own unique look to the design.

Backgrounder

A backgrounder features a crosshatched pattern that can be used as an option to darken areas of the leather that are not carved.  It has the effect of highlighting the other areas of the design by contrast.

There is something about working with your hands to carve leather that is very relaxing and has the benefit of producing beautiful art that you and your friends can admire.  Because no two pieces of leather are exactly the same, any artwork you produce will have a unique look that is all yours.  It requires both physical effort and concentration to perform making it both creative and hands-on at the same time.

Few hobbies use more of your skills and focus than carving leather does which gives you a unique sense of well-being both while carving and enjoying the final result.

Where do you get the inspiration for projects?  Well, fortunately, if you’re just starting out, there are leather sets that provide both the tools and some starter projects.  For instance, the three kits on our list have the tools and some great projects to begin your new hobby.

Beyond that, you can get inspiration from just about anywhere.  The internet is a great place to find projects.  YouTube and Pinterest have thousands of leather projects to choose from.
