Starter Tool Kit: Top 5 Best Rated General Tool Sets

Whether you’re just getting started yourself or you’re looking for a great gift for college students, new homeowners, new apartment renters, or even your kids, a starter tool kit will provide the basic tools everyone needs.  A starter tool kit can help you do home repairs, assemble furniture, hang picture frames, do bike maintenance, fix minor car problems, build shelves, and much more.

Starter Tool Kit Apollo Precision Tools DT9706 General Tool SetYou could try to assemble your own starter tool kit one tool at a time as you find a need for it, but you can save money in the long run and avoid the frustration by buying a complete starter tool kit.

Some advantages of a starter tool kit include its protective, portable bag or case and the great value you get over buying each tool separately.

A starter tool kit can mean different things to different people depending on what they plan to use it for and how handy they are.  Fortunately, when manufacturers choose tools for a starter tool kit, they do research to find out which tools are most commonly needed by those getting their first tool kit to tackle assembly, maintenance, and repair projects around their home or office.

What tools should you look for in a starter tool kit?

Hammer

You may not need a hammer in your home tool kit, but it is the most common tool needed around the home or office.  You can use a hammer for many tasks including furniture assembly, picture hanging, crafts, building kid projects, and many, many more.

Starter Tool Kit Torpedo LevelNot all hammers are created equally.  The most common hammer is the standard claw hammer that is used to both hammer and remove nails.  Most kits have compact hammers which need a little more energy to do the job.  If you think you will be using the hammer a lot it might be better to buy a high-quality, larger hammer separately that will make hammering must faster and easier.

Screwdrivers

Rivaling the hammer as one of the most important starter toolkit tools, screwdrivers come in lots of sizes and lengths, but most have either a Philips or slotted head.  You need both types of heads because it’s common to find both types of screws.  Having multiple screwdriver lengths is also important to make sure you can reach screws in deep or tight spaces.

Tape Measure

“Measure twice, cut once” is a popular saying.  You typically use a measuring tape to perform the measuring part.  The most useful length is something over 12 feet which will accommodate most tasks.  Whether you choose a tape measure with SAE markings, metric, or both is a personal preference.

Long Nose Pliers

When you need to tighten nuts and bolts in tight spaces or need to fish for lost screws and nuts that are hard to reach, long nose pliers are the go-to tool.  I use them often to hold nuts and bolts to get them started when my large fingers won’t fit.

Starter Tool Kit Measuring ViewAdjustable Wrench

This is the wrench I use most.  When you’re tightening or loosening a nut or bolt you’ll find that you typically need two wrenches.  Many tool sets come with box wrenches, but they only come with one of each size.  That means you need a second wrench.  That’s where an adjustable wrench comes in.  Like its name implies, you can adjust it to fit just about any regular size nut or bolt so that you can tighten it or loosen it.

Torpedo Level

If you think you’ll be hanging a lot of pictures, shelves, or racks on your walls, a level is essential.  A home tool set may come with a level, but it will be a torpedo level.  A torpedo level is shaped generally like a torpedo and can have a magnetic portion so it will stick to metal.  It’s compact in size and lightweight and is also very handy if you’re trying to level a major appliance like a washer, dryer, or refrigerator.  It would be nice if kits came with larger sized levels that are easier to use, but they won’t fit in a starter tool kit.

Combination Wrenches

The most common method for tightening and loosening nuts and bolts is with a box or open-end wrench.  Combination wrenches have both an open-end and a box end wrench usually of the same size in a single wrench.  They come in metric and SAE sizes and your starter tool kit could have either or both.  SAE wrenches are common in the U.S. where measurements are in inches, but more and more appliances and cars use metric nuts and bolts.

Tool Cases or Bags

One of the favorite features of a starter tool set may be the included protective storage case or bag that may even have special cutouts designed to hold each tool.  That means that every tool will have its own space making it less likely that you will lose it.  Tool bags don’t provide as much storage organization, but can usually hold more tools.  The biggest complaint we get about molded case storage cases is how difficult it is to remove tools from the case.

Starter Tool Kit On Table ViewBox Cutter

Not every starter tool kit will come with a razor knife or box cutter, but it is a very useful tool for opening packages and breaking down boxes for recycling.  Many kits feature snap-off razor knives with multiple blades already in the housing.

Ratchet Sets

Not as common in a starter tool kit, ratchet sets are easier and faster to use than box wrenches.  Eventually, you should look into getting a basic set to expand your toolkit, especially if you plan on working on yard implements or your car.

Power Tools

You also won’t find power tools in a basic starter tool kit.  The most common power tool for use around your home and the one I use the most is a portable drill driver.  The one I have uses a long-lasting, rechargeable, and powerful lithium-ion battery making it very portable and useful for drilling holes or driving screws and bolts.  Thinking ahead, this is definitely one power tool you should add to your toolkit as soon as possible.

Tool Materials and Construction

Let’s face it, a starter toolkit will not have professional-grade tools included.  They’re too expensive and not necessary for typical projects.  It’s fair to expect to get quality tools in your toolkit.  Quality tools use harder, heat treated steel like carbon or vanadium with chrome plating and are tested to meet ANSI standards.  Quality tools also usually come with plastic-dipped, ergonomic handles that provide a more comfortable, slip-resistant grip.

We searched tool forums, manufacturer sites, consumer sites, retail sites, customer review sites, and social media to find the best rated and most popular toolkits available.
